The Aural Garden
ICAM Undergraduate Thesis Proposal
The Aural Garden brings the organic and the virtual together creating a place where the “Gardener” can find aural patterns in natural design and create beautiful sounding gardens. The Garden is going to be a stand-alone application created most likely in OpenGL. Like PD, the application starts with an empty virtual garden and the gardener is allowed to use different virtual tools to plant, trim, dig, water and all other gardening tools needed to mend the Aural Garden. Each plant that you choose to plant in the Aural Garden has its own sound fingerprint and as the plants grows in time according to existing botanical algorithms, each plants aural timbre will grow in volume, pitch, number of harmonics, and other timbre traits. Using the virtual garden tools to manipulate these plants will change the sound that plant emulates accordingly. The plants are also affected by the changing real weather that is pulled from data on real dates in the past.
Because of the limitlessness of this proposed project, the Aural Garden’s creation is going to be completed in three parts.
Part 1:
-2D coded prototype garden using left/right as stereo field.
-Use HD screen to enhance resolution.
-Computer mouse to control navigation and tools.
Part 2:
-3D Garden with 5.1 surround sound.
-Projector to view garden in life size fashion.
-Creation of custom handheld control device to Aural garden tools.
Part 3:
-Submersive 3D Garden with 3D virtual reality goggles.
-Networking of gardeners – the ability to access garden communities.
